August Faves

Happy Sunday y’all! I’m glad this week is almost over. It’s been kind of a stressful week, here. Hubby’s went back to TX this morning. He worked like a maniac to get things done here before he left. We’ve had our eyes on Hurricane Irma, and there was a lot for him to do if he was going to be gone when it made its way here. Mercy, she’s a nasty, nasty storm! I’m not a worrier, by nature, thankfully. To me, worrying just doesn’t make sense. I cannot change a thing by worrying, so it’s a waste of energy that I could be using elsewhere. If I could change things by worrying then I wouldn’t need to worry! See how that works? Haha So, we are focusing on making sure we are ready when Irma hits. Lucky for us, we won’t be getting a direct hit, just the outer bands. They are still forecasting tropical storm force winds and 4-6″ of rain, so still nothing to sneeze at. Please, please be safe if you live anywhere near the path of this storm! Heed the warnings of your local officals!

Now, on to the point of today’s post! I thought I would talk about some of my favorite products from August. Some I may have talked about here already, and some will be talked about more in depth in upcoming posts.

Skin care

Let’s talk about skin, baby! Product number one that has stolen my heart is Clinique’s All About Eyes Rich. My eye area feels amazing since I’ve been using this cream. It’s very thick and rich, as the name suggests. Talk about hydrating! I haven’t noticed much difference, as far as my fine lines, circles, or puffiness, but I think it takes several weeks to see results, and I’m pretty patient.

Product number two that I cannot live without is Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask. It smells divine!! Sometimes, I just sit and smell it haha It really smells that good! I’ve missed a few applications due to getting my brows and upper lip waxed. Because of the acids in the mask, you should withhold using it the week before any facial waxing, or you could lose some skin along with your unwanted hairs. My face skin looks so good after I wash this mask off. It looks so healthy and fresh!

Makeup

I’m going to talk about these products in order of application and the first is IT Cosmetics’ Your Skin But Better CC+ This is a full coverage, color correcting cream, with SPF 50. The second ingredient, after water, is snail secretion filtrate. Not kidding, y’all haha It’s also chock full of botanical extracts, hyaluronic acid and collagen, along with some vitamins. I pick this over all of my foundations. It could be because it’s summer and it’s pretty light feeling. Whatever the reason, this is my go-to for foundation right now. The coverage is outstanding, and it still looks natural. Application looks much better on me with a sponge versus a brush, which is a bit of a bummer. I prefer a brush to soaking and wringing out a sponge, but that’s only because I’m a bit lazy hehe

Next up, are the Trolls and My Little Pony eyeshadow palettes from Pür Cosmetics. Honestly, I think I prefer the Trolls palette, only because there are more useable shades for me. The MLP palette has a yellow shimmer and a heavy gold metallic. I looked at those two and said WTF out loud. That could also have been because I really dislike the color yellow. Dunno why, but I do. The formula for these shadows is great! Nicely pigmented, easily blended and buildable. I’ll admit, I totally fell for the themes and wasn’t expecting much. I was happily proved wrong!

The final product in makeup that I’m loving from August is L’Óreal’s Lash Paradise mascara. I always use a waterproof formula and this was no exception. I don’t know what kind of hoodoo magic went into this mascara, and I don’t care. This stuff is incredible! It lengthens, volumizes, thickens and it removes fairly easily with a good eye makeup remover. It can get clumpy, but that is partly user error, I think. It doesn’t flake and I haven’t noticed any transfer. I almost always see transfer on my left eye. Only my left eye. No idea what that’s about haha, but it doesn’t happen with this mascara.

Hair Care

21616676_10155729752739357_126867937_o

I only have one thing to talk about under hair care this month, but it’s a good one. On a whim, I ordered a hair sleeping mask from Sephora. I ordered rose, because it claimed to be smoothing and anti-frizz. For some reason, I was blessed with natural frizz to go along with my natural curl. No humidity necessary. Thanks a lot, universe. Where have these masks been all of my wild, curly haired life??? Here’s how they work: you apply the mask and work it into clean, dry hair. Pile your hair onto your head, and cover with the provided cap, and go to sleep! When you wake up, rinse your hair and you will have the softest, curliest and frizz-free hair when it dries! Talk about being shook … I immediately ordered five more and this will be a weekly routine for me. They are $6 and worth every. single. penny.

Self Care

21584385_10155728653659357_685626074_o

Above all else, self care is the most important, in my opinion. Taking care of me helps me be on top of my game, whatever my game might be. I’ve talked about my autoimmune disease and the chronic pain it causes. Some days, my pain meds aren’t enough. That’s where Essential Relaxtions comes in. They are a bath bomb company out of FL, but they are so much more: candles, wax melts, mineral baths … if it has the potential to relax you, they sell it.

I am a dedicated fan of their bath bombs. They are well sized, very fizzy, well scented, soften the bath water like crazy and the are incredibly well priced!! In fact, I don’t think they sell a thing over $10. They are every bit as good as Lush. Even better, if you ask me, because of the price. The only drawback is shipping time. It takes a little over a week from the time you place your order until you receive it. However, I believe that is because they make the bombs when you order them, and I’m okay with that. I just have to make sure I have one or two set aside when I order, so I am never without. I’m not even kidding, they are that good. I consider myself a bit of a bath product afficianado and these bath bombs are where it’s at. Heck, they were even featured by BuzzFeed! You can find their products here. Check them out on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter @essentialrelaxx and they even have a YouTube channel where you can see the bombs in action! Also, enter CARRIE15 at checkout for a 15% discount on your order! It’s not an affiliate code, just a cool thing the company is offering for my followers!

Alrighty lovelies, I think that’ll do it for my August faves. What products did you come across last month that you can’t live without? Lemme know!

Midweek Mask ~ Formula 10.0.6 Be Berry Smooth

Happy Hump Day, y’all! I am getting excited, finally haha My hubby comes home Wednesday to help get out daughter moved back to school and my truck is ready! Not exactly sure which I’m most excited for, at this point hahaha He’s been working out of state since the end of June, and he’ll be going back a few days after we get her moved … sigh … pretty bummed about that, honestly. We gotta do what we gotta do sometimes, even if we don’t like it. That’s one of the things about adulting that I don’t love. Ah well, I am also elated to be getting my truck back. My transmission went out, then my distributor went haywire and this time, my spark plugs were a mess, likely a result of the distributor. The repair guy (a longtime family friend) said it runs like a totally different truck now hahahaha I am going to assume that’s a good thing.

I also got several deliveries today … YAY! In one of those deliveries, was a whole box of skin care from Ulta! Sometimes, Ulta and Sephora take forever, to process and ship my orders. I have no idea why, but I placed this order on the 11th. Not too bad. Anyway, I had forgotten what I ordered, so it was quite a treat to open the box and find this guy, begging to be reviewed tonight haha

I was more than happy to oblige! I have never purchased a peel off mask in a tube. It’s always been the one use packets, not that they are all that different. Then only difference is I can use much less when it’s packages like this. When I’m using the one-time use packets, I really feel like I have to use all of the product (no matter how much is really in there), so that it doesn’t dry up and go to waste.

For starters, this smells amazing. Definitely fruity, but not sickly sweet kind of fruity. You can pick out the berry and the pineapple. It also has some interesting ingredients: actual blueberry fruit, coffee, morinda citrifolia, also known as cheese fruit (lol, whatttt?), mangosteen, pomegranate, tea leaf, and açai. WOW!!! This mask is chock full of botanical, superfruity goodness! It says it will reveal “super soft berry smooth skin”. Let’s just see about that …

To begin with, I used significantly less that I usually do, simply because of the packaging. This resulted in a much thinner coating on my face. I’m not sure how I felt about it being thinner, and may use more the next time I use this one, to see if it makes any difference.

20906943_10155662032124357_682094818_o

It’s a sheer lilac color, and smells incredible. It goes on just like normal peel-off mask and the instructions say to leave on 10-15 minutes, or until dry. Mine dried fairly quickly, except for my forehead area. That took a bit longer, for some reason. Removal was pretty standard, except it said to rinse thoroughly with warm water. Is that standard with peel off masks? Hmm lol for the life of me, I can’t recall! Now, was I moisturized?

20904366_10155662032104357_185934834_o

Umm … maybe. My cheek area, below my cheek bones felt a bit dry initially. That may have been from rinsing with warm water, really. After waiting an hour or so, my skin does feel quite hydrated. Is my skin “berry” smooth? It didn’t magically remove texture, but my face does feel quite nice. Maybe with multiple uses it will work on my texture? That would be cool, and I will be paying attention to that, the more I use this.

I really like this one. The price was fair ($7 at Ulta), the smell is pretty awesome, and my skin feels pretty nice. I’m looking forward to seeing what repeated uses will do for my skin! Do you have a favorite peel-off mask? Lemme know all about it!

Skin Care Saturday ~ Freeman Beauty Green Tea and Orange Blossom

**This post contains affiliate links. Read my disclosure statement here.**

Happy weekend lovelies! I hope everyone is having a wonderful Saturday. My niece is still with me, so my weekend is a little less restful than usual. For some reason, she was up at 3:30 this morning … and stayed awake until about 7, slept until 8:30 and she is running WIDE OPEN right now. Having her for this long has made me realize that I could never have a child with the conditions I have. Kudos to the parents who are able to do it!! I simply don’t have the energy to parent like I did with my daughter, nearly twenty years ago. I’m also creeping toward my mid-forties. Don’t get me wrong, I love having my niece here, and we have a good time. It’s thoroughly exhausting, and I am not used to having to tend to someone. People are usually tending to me LOL One cool thing about having her here is she likes to pick my masks. It sure takes away my indecision haha

She chose a peel-off mask for tonight and I was glad! I feel like I need to peel away the last few days haha so this is perfect! My go-to for peel off masks is Freeman Beauty. To me, they are one of the best, as far as “drugstore” masks go. Tonight, my niece chose the green tea and orange blossom brightening mask. It helps to refine pores and improve dark spots, and is for normal to combination skin. There is a very light floral fragrance, if you are sensitive to those things. I couldn’t smell it while it was on, and could smell it only when I got very close to the open package. As with most peel off masks, it is very thick. Be careful to avoid any baby hairs you may have around your face, as well as your brows. I can never be patient enough to avoid my brows, and guess who lost a few hairs tonight? Sigh … yep … me lol

The leave-on time for this is 10-15 minutes, but they never dry in the recommended time for me. I probably apply a bit thick, because I always try to remove these types of masks in one big sheet. I am usually pretty successful, but there was one area that wasn’t quite dry, so it broke there. Sigh … hurt my feels a little.

Let’s talk about the claims … was my skin brightened? Hmm … no. It did seem to remove some of my redness once I peeled it off, and my cheeks look pretty calm in the picture above. I’m gonna call that a win. Were my pores refined? No. In fact, it seems as if the pores around my upper lip area are a bit MORE visible. Ugh … def not what I wanted to achieve. Finally, how about any dark spots? I have one spot on my left cheek, from a very deep pimple. It does, indeed, appear to be less dark. Freeman hit two out of the three claims listed for my skin. Percentage wise, that’s 66%. Not fabulous, but not terrible either. I suppose it boils down to which of the claims are more important to you. For me, this is a win! There are a few great pore blurring primers on the market that work well for me, so the fact that some of my pores seemed to be accentuated is no big deal. It removing my rosacea redness is a very bid deal for me. I have battled this blasted condition for nearly twenty years, and am having very little luck with prescription topicals. I have, only recently, found a product that cosmetically covers the redness like a champ (IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness Neutralizing Correcting Cream 0.37 fl oz. by IT Cosmetics BEAUTY<<affiliate link>> … seriously look into it if you have redness. It’s pricey, but worth it.) The more redness I can remove through other means, the less product I have to use to cover it up.

Have you tried this particular peel off? What are your thoughts? How well did it live up to its claims on your skin? Do you have a better mask that you use? Lemme know!

Mid~Week Mask ~ Luminating Lotus

Happy Wednesday, lovelies! Today has been a great day! My niece is here, slumber partying for a few days. She’s five … I wrote about her a while back. You can read about that here. She told me earlier that tonight was going to be a girl’s night out haha We won’t be going anywhere, but those are her words for having a spa night. In fact, she picked out my mask for tonight, and I hope she picked a good one!

This came in my Ipsy bag this month. An unboxing post for Ipsy and Birchbox will be coming on Thursday, so this is a bit of a sneak peek. For July, Ipsy gave their subscribers the option to choose an item for their bag, so I jumped on the Tony Moly option. In addition to this lotus mask, they included a green tea mask. YAY! Alrighty … let’s get to it!

Okay, I’m just gonna say it … Tony Moly masks are not my favorite <ducks from the K beauty lovers of the world> I was hoping this particular style would be better (which is why I was excited above.) I don’t know what it is about their serum, but it leaves my face quite sticky. The directions say to pat the serum in and leave on. Ummmm … I cannot do that. I will leave it on my skin as long as possible, but I cannot leave it on while I sleep. I would be afraid I would wake up with a break out. Because of the stickiness, I cannot tell if my skin is moisturized or not. It’s definitely not luminized (hehe). The masks aren’t awful, by any means. I’ve had some awful face masks and I’ve absolutely had worse. Would I repurchase? Ummm … no. Not when there are so many incredible K beauty skin care products out there that don’t leave me so sticky. Don’t get me wrong, Tony Moly is a great brand! Maybe it’s something in my skin that this serum clashes with. I have six or seven Tony Moly masks left that I will use, or maybe I’ll donate them. I have tried to like them. I really have! I have reviewed them before, and really focused on the positives. I am running out of positives, though. I feel so bad giving this mask a less than glowing review, but it is what it is. At least, for me and my skin, this is a miss.

What is your experience with Tony Moly masks? Do they work well with your skin? What about their other products, do they work well for you? Lemme know!

Skin Care Saturday ~ Freeman Beauty Infusion

Happy Saturday, lovelies! I hope you all are having a relaxing weekend. I just had a mini fangirl moment. I messaged one of my favorite YouTubers, Emily Noel, and she messaged me back! I love that there are so many different platforms for internet personalities to interact with their followers, and she literally made my day : )

On that happy note, let’s talk about tonight’s mask. I ordered this Hibiscus + Vitamin C from Sally’s Beauty and it came the other day. Their masks are pretty reasonably priced. This one was just over $3. I don’t have local access to the Freeman Beauty Infusion sheet masks, and that’s not a bad price for a sheet mask, period. Sheet masks are so funny to me. They never fit me right, so I think like I look like a lunatic, no matter my facial expression haha

It has a very nice, light floral scent. It doesn’t really smell like hibiscus, but it’s nice, all the same. It also wasn’t so loaded with serum that it dripped down my neck. I really don’t like when that happens. It just messy, and I do not like messy when I’m trying to relax.

I kept this mask on the full twenty minutes. One thing I noticed right away is the serum was not sticky. There are a few brands that have very sticky serum. So much so that my face is still tacky in the morning. I’ve figured out which brands those are, and I actually rinse my face a little when I remove them. I removed the mask about an hour ago and my skin feel like skin. YAY! It also feels nice and hydrated. Double YAY! A few things of note about this particular mask … it is free of parabens and sulfates and is NOT tested on animals! Triple YAY!!!

Now for the bummer news … I don’t see any difference in my skin’s brightness or tone, nor was my discoloration corrected. My thought is that it obviously won’t do all of that after one use, but I think there should be something that says “noticeable difference after six uses” … something along those lines, anyway. The claims on these packages could be a little misleading for those who are new to skin care and facial masks.

Overall, I am pretty pleased with tonight’s choice. I will follow up with Sephora’s avocado sleeping mask, for an added hydration boost. I did some burning in my yard today and being in the smoke is a bit drying for my already dry-ish skin.

Have you used products from the Freeman Beauty Infusion line? What do you think about them? Lemme know!

Skin Care Saturday ~ #decadence

Hello lovelies! I hope y’all are having a relaxing, cool weekend. I know I said this in my last post, but it’s HOT y’all!! Our heat index has routinely been well over 100°, which aggravates my health. I think temperatures like that aggravate even healthy people haha It’s just ridiculous! When it came time for my Saturday mask time, this girl was excited! My rosacea as been raging with the heat, as well, so any cooling, soothing things I can do make me a very happy camper.

I ordered this cool bioBelle mask from Ulta last week and I was so happy when it came in yesterday. I had seen people get this mask in some Boxycharm unboxings and I thought it looked really neat. So, I ordered one to see what it was all about!

This #decadence mask is loaded with chocolate and açai berry, We’ve all heard that chocolate is full of great antioxidants, and these help hydrate and soften the skin. Açai berry helps your skin retain its moisture and also helps to fight free radicals, which can be quite damaging. (Info taken from the bioBelle website.)

I loved the way this mask smelled. It wasn’t overpowering, but there was a slight chocolate scent, with a hint of something sweet and flowery. I will assume that was the açai berry. I also liked that this mask was quite thin. A lot of masks are thick, and I feel like my skin can’t breathe while I’m wearing them. Is that even a thing? Hmm … haha Anyway, the thicker masks feel pretty heavy, and they don’t want to stay in place. I also have trouble with the thicker masks fitting my face. I feel like I have an average sized face/head, but some masks just don’t want to conform to my face. I really don’t think my face is oddly shaped. Is it??? Sigh … now I’m wondering … Odd face shape or not, this one actually fit my face well. I think part of that was the thinner material.

I wore #decadence for 17 minutes and my face was still pretty red after, but it was much less than before I put the mask on. The serum is a bit sticky, but the directions do say to rinse off after removal, which I thought was different. Most instructions tell you to pat the remaining serum into your skin and to NOT rinse off. I left the serum on for a few hours, just to see what happened. Shockingly, nothing happened hahaha My face was kinda sticky for those few hours. The serum never fully penetrated, and I don’t know if that was because my skin couldn’t absorb any more, or if it doesn’t absorb well. My face feel pretty good this morning, though!

These masks are a little on the pricey side … $4.99-ish. Ulta is currently running a “buy one, get one 50% off” sale, but I don’t know how long that will be going on. Overall, I really liked this mask. It helped ease my heatwave induced rosacea flare, which is pretty priceless, in and of itself. My face looks and feel pretty good, the day after. And listen, who doesn’t want to lounge around with chocolate on their face??? Check them out, tell me what you think. The bioBelle website has a much larger selection than Ulta. There may even be some unicorn themed items …

Have any of you tried these masks before? How well did they work for you? Lemme know!

Mid week relief

I dunno about where y’all live, but in central SC it is H-O-T!!! I don’t mean slightly warmer than usual. I mean fry an egg on the ground, my a/c can’t keep up, don’t run the dryer during the day kind of hot. Our heat indices are routinely above 100° F, which means our humidity levels are ridiculous. I need a mask tonight that is going to calm and cool my poor face skin haha

Luckily, I had a order from Walmart come in today. I think I got four or five different types of masks. Walmart has a great selection of any type of face mask you could need or want. They are great quality and easy on the wallet, too! Tonight’s choice is 7th Heaven Creamy Coconut, from Montagne Jeunesse, for dry and tired skin. Haha that’s me! A mask, just for me! They know my life haha

19724074_10155525594969357_9431379_o

This mask claims to create a hydrating vitality boost. It was very creamy and smelled GREAT! What I wasn’t expecting was for this to burn like heck fire on my upper lip! Holy frijoles … it burned!! I scanned the ingredients to see if there was something crazy that might be causing it. There wasn’t. I decided to stick it out, and the burn faded after a minute or two. This mask is cruelty free. I talked to my hubby on the phone while it dried, then went to the bathroom to rinse and survey the damage to my poor upper lip.

19807390_10155525595124357_234921119_o

That’s me being annoyed that it’s burning, by the way. I was very surprised to see zero redness where I felt burning. None. Zero Zip. I was a little shocked, considering what I felt. But hey, I’m not gonna argue with the facts. My face feels soooooo gooooood y’all! Days like today can really aggravate my fibro, so anywhere I can find some comfort I am going for that. We’re just starting with days like this, so I need to load up my trick bag!! Funny enough, hot weather aggravates my fibro, cold weather aggravates my RA. Can’t win for losing hahaha

Despite feeling like my upper lip was literally on fire for a minute, I really liked this mask. Confusing, I know. Welcome to my life! I love how my skin feels and the burn only lasted a minute, truly. The outcome was worth the bit of initial discomfort. And for $1.14 … come on. This feels better than more expensive masks I’ve used, that’s for sure.

What do you do to comfort your skin on insanely hot days? How do you stay cool? What do you do when you can feel your body starting to fight itself? Lemme know!

Family fun

I have a five year old niece, and she totally has me wrapped. Maybe more than my own daughter haha We love to have slumber parties. Tonight is her second night with me this week, and she is sweeter than pie.

You all know I’ve been flaring for about two weeks now. That doesn’t stop us from partying, though. It definitely slows it down, but the party doesn’t stop. Five year olds are not known for their patience, but she tries. Her mommy, (my baby sister), has systemic lupus, so Keyra understands bad days, as much as a five year old is capable of, anyway.

Hot baths are my go-to when I feel like this, and they happen to be one of her favorite things to do! She LOVES dropping the bath bombs in and watching them fizz. I ordered some random bombs from Amazon a few months ago, and tonight we picked cherry. Phew … talk about highly scented!!!

After bath time fun, we were in the den, and she had a bowl of cereal. She stopped eating, looked at me and said “Kewy (she says Carrie so funny), what else sweet can I do for you? I could massage your feet?” My heart immediately melted. This precious little angel …

She does give a good foot massage, but what we did instead was a mini facial. I have a Peter Thomas Roth cucumber toner spray and she loves when I spray her face. Not too much though, that stuff sprays like a fire hose hahaha Then I give her two little squirts of ELF hydrating serum and she rubs it all over her face. We finished up with our “scent of the day”, which was a few squirts of Bath & Body Works Winter Candy Apple.

I hate that this disease has caused a five year old to be so concerned about making me feel good. At the same time, it has allowed her sweet soul to shine. And does it shine!! Don’t misunderstand me, she can be hell on wheels sometimes. Most times haha, but in my worst moments, her best moments shine bigger and brighter than anything I’ve ever seen.

Do you have a special little in your life? When do they shine their brightest? What are the little things they do to show that sweet side?

Be on the look out tomorrow for a Dior mask review. I am super stoked to share it with y’all! Have a great day today!

Carrie❤️

Working for the weekend

Whoohooo … the weekend is here! I don’t work outside of my home, so the “weekend” is a bit irrelevant to me. Every day is a “work” day on a homestead. For many of my fellow chronic illness warriors, however, working outside of the home is a necessity. Relaxation for my pals out there is a MUST, and the weekend is the most obvious time to do that. When I am feeling stressed out, run down, exhausted (take your pick), I have several methods I use to recharge my batteries.

The first thing is to demand (yes, I said demand haha) some “you” time from your family. Alone time can be incredibly rejuvenating, even if it’s 30 minutes in your room, with the door closed. Read a book, watch a show, take a quick nap, or just sit quietly and reflect on the week. Another method I use to relax is a hot, hot bath. I am the queen of bath products haha! I have bubble baths, bath salts, bath bombs, bath fizzies, bath oils … you name it and I probably have it. I incorporate baths into my “me” time. I get the water as hot as I can stand it and soak for 20 minutes or so. It can be even more relaxing by using candlelight, rather than harsh bathroom lighting. I use scents that are known to be relaxing (see yesterday’s blog post about aromatherapy). For me, that’s lavender, rose, gardenia and just anything from Bath and Body Works. They have a specific aromatherapy line that is really nice.

Something else I really enjoy using to relax is hot tea, or tea to my European friends. I really like hot tea, no matter the season. A few of my favorites are Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, peppermint, chamomile and a chamomile, lavender blend. There is nothing better to me, after a rough day, than getting out of a hot bath, lounging on my bed with a good book and a cup of hot tea. It is manna for the soul, I swear.

Some of us with more extroverted personalities find they recharge by being around people, which is totally fine! I don’t get it haha, but if that’s you, plan an evening out with some friends, catch a movie or have dinner and drinks, if your meds allow for alcohol consumption. However you are able to best recharge yourself, do that.

Studies show that most of us afflicted with chronic diseases are women, and despite our illnesses or conditions, we are still the backbone of our families. Our lives (and the lives of those around us) can be impacted in a negative way if we aren’t operating at our peak, whatever that might be. Those of us with chronic diseases/illnesses/conditions tend to operate with a disadvantage as it is, so anything we can do to keep our emotional system running smoothly will help every other aspect of our lives.

Your peace of mind is so important on this journey. It can be almost impossible to not fall into a depression when we are faced with our unique challenges. Keeping our heads above water has to be a priority, and finding time to really relax can help. I hope you can find some quiet time (or fun time, for you extroverts) and recharge this weekend.

Carrie ♥
