Hey Hey, It’s Sephora Play!

Well, technically, it’s Play! by Sephora, but that wouldn’t rhyme! Happy Friday, lovelies! I hope you all have had a wonderful week! Mine certainly got better at the end. I got three deliveries, one from Sephora, one from Pur Cosmetics, and one from Macy’s. We’ll be talking about all of those next week. When I checked my mail today, I was shocked to see my Play! by Sephora box inside. That box usually doesn’t come until later in the month and it’s never gotten here before Ipsy or Birchbox! YAY!

This is my third month with this subscription service, and I’m pretty pleased so far. I’m quite happy with all of my subscriptions, to be honest. I love being able to try out a product, with minimal investment. If I don’t like it, it’s not a big deal, and there have been some products that just weren’t my cup of tea. Overall, though, everything has been great. One thing I particularly like about Sephora’s service is you get five deluxe samples plus a fragrance sample. I’ve become a bit of a perfume junkie lately, and this is a GREAT way to find new scents. In fact, I have found a few new fragrances that I cannot live without now … looking at you Versace Bright Crystal!!

Let’s jump on in!

For starters, how flipping cute is this bag??? And I love that they used the Periodic Table to talk about beauty ingredients! As always, you get 50 free Beauty Insider points with purchase, but they have to be used in-store. That’s a big bummer if you don’t have a store nearby. I think one was recently built in our JC Penny store, but I haven’t been there in ages. Guess I should go and check it out! Also, these points are not good forever. They expire on the last day of the month after you get your bag. In other words, these 50 points I got with my August box expire September 30th.

Lets dig into these goodies, shall we?

Starting with skin items, there’s a mini Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation stick in the shade Shell ($46). It looks light enough for my skin tone, so YAY! Next up is Korres Golden Krocus Ageless Saffron Elixir Serum ($98/1oz). This is something I am SUPER excited about! It looks very glittery in the bottle, but doesn’t seem to be too much on the skin. I just had to put a drop on the back of my hand, once I saw it haha It smells wonderful!! This has actual Greek saffron and, from what the paperwork says, it takes 150 Krocus flowers in order to produce one gram of saffron. Finally, we have the beautyblender micro.mini sponge applicator ($18). These are the perfect size for concealer, and maybe using a damp sponge will keep my under eye area from looking so dried out and crease-y.

I’m not really a huge fan of the hair products that come in these boxes. Most are texturizing sprays or volumizing sprays. My hair has plenty of both haha and sprays just make my hair out of control or sticky. This spray from Alterna Haircare, Caviar Anti-Aging Miracle Multiplying Volume Mist ($30/4.8oz) is both volumizing AND texturizing, so it should be interesting! This has a wonderful citrus scent, so I will definitely try it out. I’m just not going to have high hopes hahaha

This is an interesting product, Clinique’s HIM Dual-Ended High Impact Mascara & Primer Duo. This must only come as a mini, because I cannot find it on the Sephora website anywhere. I have never used a lash primer before, and this claims to be moisturizing, which I could probably use. I try to only use waterproof mascara (watery eyes and living in the South haha) and that has to be hard on lashes. It also says using the primer will create more a more vibrant and longer lasting eye look. I am looking forward to seeing what effect this will have on my mine!

Finally, we have my favorite part of the Play! bag:

I had to laugh when I read the description of My Burberry Black ($72/1oz) … “inspired by the iconic Burberry trench coat” What??? It features a blend of jasmine, candied rose and amber. How do those scents jive with a trench coat, exactly? It also has peach and patchouli. Don’t get me wrong, it smells incredible. I just don’t understand how a trench coat was the inspiration for the scent hahaha

So, that’s my August Play! bag. This service is $10 a month and I think it’s well worth that price. If I went out and bought full sizes of these products (not including the Clinique duo), the total cost would be $264. What do you think? Do you subscribe to any of these boxes? Which ones are your favorites? Lemme know!

UNBOXING!

I love unboxings. I think they are a really fun to see what comes in subscription boxes, and I’m a huge fan. It’s not always easy for me to get out of the house, and I don’t always feel like I can stand in a makeup store and check out everything they have. Let’s face it, I think any makeup lover can get lost in Ulta or Sephora haha! I have gotten lost in Ulta and I don’t always realize in the moment what I’m doing to myself, standing and walking around for an hour or two (or three hehe). Subscription boxes are a really cool way for folks like me to check out new products without a huge investment in time, money or physical exertion.

Imagine my surprise when I learned that Target and Walmart offer beauty boxes!! Target’s box isn’t a subscription, meaning you actually have to go to the website and order every month. For around $7, that’s not such a bad thing. Walmart offers two boxes, the Classic, which is geared toward women over 35, and the Trendsetter, geared toward women under 35. Their boxes are sent quarterly, and are $5 each. I used my daughter’s info to order the Trendsetter. I can be trendy. No, really, I can be!

My poor box took a beating, but check this out! Included items are a Masque Bar soothing sheet mask, a full size Sinful Colors Professional nail polish in Clad in Plaid (It’s showing up orange but it’s not. It’s more of a pinky coral.), a Schick HydroSilk 5 blade razor, and NYX Goctha Covered concealer in medium. Also, travel sizes of Aussie 3 Minute Miracle conditioner, Hawaiian Tropic 30 SPF sunscreen, and John Freida sea salt spray. There was also a $3 off on a $15 beauty purchase, not pictured. That’s four full size products and three travel size. With tax, this was a little under $8. This box is valued at $31.93. I call this one a winner!

The first photo is the Classic box. There’s a collagen mask from SOO AE (one of my fave skin care companies), a royal jelly night cream from Bert’s Bees, coconut oil moisturizer and liquid coconut face oil from Palmer’s, a travel size roll-on deodorant from Ban, travel shampoo and conditioner from Gliss and a travel size Colgate Optic White Beauty toothpaste. The Trendsetter box contains several of the same items, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, moisturizer and face oil. There’s a sample of Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse foundation (and a coupon), a travel size Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment conditioner, Bioré baking soda acne scrub, and a travel size Dove deodorant. I couldn’t find a value for the boxes. These travel size items are coming in very handy, as my daughter is leaving Monday for a two week trip to Canada, via train. It’s her first trip by herself and certainly her first time out of the country! These boxes came just in the nick of time haha

I think these are fabulous boxes for the price. What are your thoughts? Thinking about adding these to your subscription list? To order the Target box, simply go to their website and search beauty box. To get on the Walmart list, click here  and enjoy!

Hair, there, everywhere

My parents blessed me with wild hair. It was difficult to tame as a kid, thick and curly, and my mom always gave me the dumbest haircuts. I think a lot of us can relate to that last one, amiright? It was the seventies … it’s just the way things were. As I got older, in my tween/teen years, my hair developed a natural frizz. Thanks a lot, genetics. I spent the majority of my teens with very, very crunchy hair because of the gallons of gel I dumped on it.

Fast forward a few … ahem … years and finding a product that actually works to eliminate frizz is a challenge. Add to that a product to define my curls and it can be downright laughable/tear-inducing. That’s not to say it’s been an impossible feat. Just challenging and expensive.

There are a few products that I don’t think I could live without. The first is Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus Curling Shampoo-13 oz. I am IN LOVE with this shampoo!! The texture is a little different from what I am used to. It’s a little thin, so that does take some getting used to. I combine that with L’Oreal Paris Hair Expert Extraordinary Oil Curls Re-Nourish Mask, 8.5 fl. oz. (Packaging May Vary). I try not to use the mask every day because 1 – it might be overkill lol and 2 – that would get expensive. On days I don’t use the L’Oreal mask, I use Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Strong Treatment 8 Ounce (236ml). I have been dealing with hair loss from various medications and crazy high inflammation levels, so anything I can do to strengthen my luscious locks I try to do.

Post shower is pretty normal, I think. Except, I don’t use a terry cloth towel on my head. I use a Turbie Twist Microfiber Super Absorbent Hair Towel (2 Pack) Aqua-White. Another curly goddess told me there was some data that showed using a terry cloth towel actually pulled out the natural oils while your hair is wrapped up, which helps create frizz. I may have immediately hung up on her to get my hands on some Turbie Twists. No … seriously. Of course, I only use a wide toothed comb to get my tangles out and I NEVER brush my hair dry. Never. Ever. I also don’t own a blow dryer. I’ve never been very good at figuring out how to work a diffuser and using a dryer without one is a really bad idea. I wish you could hear me giggling at the very thought of that train wreck. While damp, I spritz with some John Frieda Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment Leave-in Conditioner, 8 Ounce (Pack of 2). What happens next depends entirely on whether I am leaving my house. If I’m not leaving, my hair routine is complete. If I am leaving though (which is as little as humanly possible) I will run a dollop of Marc Anthony True Professional Strictly Curls Curl Defining Lotion 8.3 fl oz (245 ml) though while scrunching everything up.

This sounds like a lot. I am not high maintenance. I swear. Can y’all hear me shushing my husband? No? Okay, good … on to my sheets! Well, pillowcases, to be specific. For tangle-free, frizz-free, still-curly curls, you’ve got to try satin pillowcases. Were these a gift from the heavens as a consolation prize for the frizz? Very likely, and I’ll take it! Tangles don’t stand a chance because hair just slides all over the place hahaha The down side is the pillows kinda slide all over the place, too. I put a blanket under mine to create a little bit of friction … problem solved!

So, that’s my hair routine, in a large nutshell. Any ones else out there facing the same hair woes? What is your routine for taming your mane?
