What’s Your Bedtime Routine?

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope everyone is doing well. I am writing this in the middle of the night, in case anyone was wondering. Haha why on Earth would that be something y’all would wonder?? Clearly, it is past my bedtime, but that is precisely what I wanted to talk with y’all about. When inspiration strikes, I have to obey her call!

Bedtime. This is probably one of my favorite times of the day. I am a creature of habit and routine. I perform better, whatever the task, when I have a predictable routine that I can follow. My bedtime routine also happens to be my favorite routine. I’m not talking about a nighttime skin care routine here. So what I am talking about?

My bedtime routine begins several hours before I actually fall asleep. When I decide that I am ready for bed, that doesn’t mean I am ready to go to sleep. It means I am ready to end my day and put it behind me. I start by brushing my teeth and washing my face, always in that order. I also tend to get a little obsessive about the order in which I do things. Things must happen in a specific manner, or I get a little out of sorts. That might not be the healthiest approach, from a mental health perspective, but it doesn’t get out of hand, I don’t think.

So, teeth brushed and face washed. Well, sort of. If I haven’t worn makeup that day, I don’t do a full-out facial wash. I will use a cotton pad and go over my face with a good micellar water, and then a good toner.

Next up is getting my blanket situation situated. Being late fall, it gets chilly at night, so I turn the electric blanket on and get my accessory blankets at the ready. I bought an Isaac Mizrahi blanket from Home Goods a few months ago and it is everything. I have never felt such a soft material!! This is the blanket I snuggle with. I make sure to keep it well out of my dogs reach. He sheds like mad and his fur must be coated with glue, because it sticks to everything like crazy!

I do several things while the blanket is warming up. First, I spritz my pillows down with a pillow spray. My current fave is Ritual of Ayurveda Bed & Body Mist. The scent is Indian Rose and Himalaya Honey. This particular rose scent is a bit musky to me. Not at all like the typical rose scents I am used to. That’s not a bad thing! It feels like the scent wraps itself around me when I lie down. It’s quite comforting!

Next, I get into my jammies. I have a bit of an addiction to pajamas. I own probably 20-25 pajamas, anything from night-shirts to onesies. When you have a chronic disease/chronic pain, pajamas become very near and dear, therefore, I need lots and lots haha I am, unfortunately, running out of space and I had to separate my jammies and store the out of season sets. Yep, it’s that kind of situation haha

After jammies comes my skin care routine. It has changed some over the last few months. I think I’ll post about it this weekend. Being as it is coming up on winter and I have dry skin, my nighttime skin care routine is pretty intense, and has two parts. Sometimes three! Between the first and second parts, I take my little doggo out for his final potty outing. This gives my products time to absorb and settle in before I go in with the heavier products. After I bring Frodo in, I grab a juice box, or some other small drink to have at my bedside.

Before I finish off my skin care routine, I put my hair up in a satin sleeping bonnet. I know, I know … it’s incredibly old-fashioned. It’s also incredibly effective at protecting my hair. Because I had it bleached and dyed, it’s very damaged. I knew that going in, though. Having it up in a bonnet keeps it from becoming a tangled nightmare while I’m sleeping. Satin is very easy on the hair (and skin). It’s also recommended that curly girls sleep on satin pillowcases, which I also have. Pillowcases perform the same function, but with the damage now, I have found the bonnet to be far more effective.

Once all of that is done, I grab a pair of thin socks and jump on into bed. This is the point when I slather myself down in lotion/body cream. I use socks in case I have to get back up, which I always do. I don’t want my feet to get covered in the stick-to-everything fur for one. For two, I don’t want to lotion/cream to rub off into my carpet. Besides, the heat from the socks helps the moisturizer to really sink into my skin. My mom taught me this trick. She had really dry hands and feet and covering them while they are drenched in moisturizers really helped to combat the problem. She used petroleum jelly, though, and I avoid that like the plague haha

Almost finished … I swear haha After all of this, I am ready to settle in with a book or to watch a program or some YouTube. I may do this for a few hours. It just depends on the day I’ve had, how I’m feeling, my pain levels, etc. I usually set an alarm on my phone, to wake me up around 11:30, in case I’ve fallen asleep without taking my nighttime medications. Once I do that, I take off the socks because who can sleep with socks on? Then I turn the light off and let the television lull me into a peaceful slumber.

And that’s it! It sounds like an awful lot, but truly, it t only takes around 15-20 minutes to get through everything. When you write it out though … phew … it sure seems like it takes hours.  There’s a comfort for me, having things follow a structured plan, so I rarely deviate from this regimen.

  1. Oh wow I’m glad I’m not the only one with a long bedtime routine. Mine is very much like yours. When I know I’m ready to go to bed (which is about the same time every night) I start a few hours early then unwind by reading or watching something on Youtube.
